There are three main categories of students who qualify for NSFAS funding:
- First-time entering students at a public university or TVET college
- Continuing students at a public university or TVET college
- Students enrolled at a private institution that has been approved by NSFAS
NSFAS Criteria for First-Time Entering Students
First-time entering students need to meet the following criteria in order to qualify for NSFAS funding:
- Be a South African citizen
- Must have obtained a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or equivalent qualification
- Meet the minimum admission requirements for the chosen field of study
- Not be in receipt of any other form of financial aid

NSFAS Criteria for Continuing Students
Continuing students need to meet the following criteria in order to qualify for NSFAS funding:
- Be a South African citizen
- Must be enrolled at a public university or TVET college
- Meet the minimum academic requirements for progression
- Not be in receipt of any other form of financial aid
NSFAS Criteria for Students enrolled at a Private Institution
Students enrolled at a private institution need to meet the following criteria in order to qualify for NSFAS funding:
- Be a South African citizen
- Must be enrolled at an institution that has been approved by NSFAS
- Meet the minimum academic requirements for progression
- Not be in receipt of any other form of financial aid
Who cannot Qualify for NSFAS Funding
who is not eligible to qualify for NSFAS?
There are a few groups of people who will not be able to qualify for NSFAS. This includes people:
- Who are not South African citizens, or do not have a valid South African green barcoded ID
- Who already have a degree or diploma
- Who are older than 30 years old
- Those who are not currently studying at a tertiary institution
- Whose household income is above the NSFAS means test threshold
- Who has previously defaulted on an NSFAS loan?
If you do not fall into any of the categories listed above, you may be eligible to apply for NSFAS funding.
